THIRTEEN

“Killing a man over jealousy?”

Milton spoke to the joker card he had propped up against his lamp. “Childish, ridiculous, mindless, ape-like jealousy?”

The joker mocked him, as jokers do. Milton turned his attentions back to his latest round of Klondike. He played a card or two, then looked back up at the joker. “Yet she defends him.”

He played on for a few minutes in silence until he lost. He began to shuffle for another round, but checked his clock. He left the cards on the table, and got into his winter clothing for the unsavory expedition back to the tower.

Someone knocked on his door. He reached out and opened it. It was Danny, with a book under his arm.

"Good afternoon, sir," he said.

"Hello, Danny," Milton said. "What can I do for you? What have you got there?"

"My clippings," he said. "I thought I'd show them to you, since you asked. Before Miss Rutherford wants me to take another walk. I've got to get away a bit, sir."

"Well, I can understand that," Milton said. And he could. Rutherford had mother-henned the young man all day. "Here on the table should do nicely," Milton said. Danny said nothing while Milton collected his playing cards. He did, however, rub his arm.

Danny approached the table, placing the scrapbook on top.

"These are some of the articles about a 5K I ran a few years ago," Danny said, running his finger across some of the clippings. They had been pasted with perfect precision onto the backing. Not a crease or a stray piece of paper anywhere.

"5K," Milton said. "Impressive. I think I'd have a heart attack after half a K."

Danny smiled for a moment, but the smile faded in an instant. He kept talking though. "It just takes training, sir. I think anyone could do it, if they're motivated. This was for charity, so I was motivated."

Scanning the caption about the race, Milton noted proceeds had gone to battered children. Danny turned the page. Now there was a picture of Danny holding a plaque and standing with a heavyset gentleman in a suit.

"Regional young adult essay writing contest," Danny said. "The Best Things About Vermont" they called it. I wrote about town. That's the Mayor with me. Second prize, statewide. First prize got to meet the governor, though."

"You should send the governor your essay," Milton said. "Maybe he'll change his mind and come visit you."

Danny looked at him with a slight smirk, but said nothing. He flipped the page, and commented on several other commendations, contests, another 5K. At one point, on a latter page, Milton spotted a newspaper picture of Danny and Miss Rutherford herself, standing in the front doorway to Elwood Mansion. The Headline read:
